I have loved to draw and paint since being able to pick up a wax crayon
as a toddler. The best present I remember receiving was a pad of paper,
a roll of sticky tape, some felt tip pens and some glitter. I was in my
element!
Thankfully since then I have taught myself how to use watercolours, acrylics
and pastels. I love to use a variety of media, often more than one in
a picture to achieve the effect I want. I also use a range of drawing
media, including graphite, charcoal and conté.
I also consciously choose to paint and draw a wide range of subjects,
and frequently try out different approaches. This way, I find am constantly
learning and my work retains a freshness as a result. Notably, such
diversity in media and subjects does not affect the cohesiveness of my
work and my style remains consistent.
Having spent a significant amount of time there, I particularly adore
the people and customs of Spain. Many of my works feature its rich culture
and strong Mediterranean colours.
My favourite artists are all the great British landscapists: Turner,
Constable
and local hero Gainsborough.
I also admire the Impressionists (and Post), especially Degas
and Cezanne.
The painting that has made the most impact on me to date is Las
Meninas by Diego de Velázquez, as I love the way you can see the artist
in the ‘mirror’ through which he is painting the maids-in-waiting.
